ART ROUNDUP: APRIL 2024

This post has images! If they do not show up for you, please click through! Happy Temperatures in the Positives, everyone! There's uhhhhh... a lotta blue and brown this month, now that I look at it all together like this. I guess it's a bit of a theme. This is the first year I've tried to do some #PleinAirpril, a monthly challenge where artists do some painting from life every day, which I definitely did not do, but I did some days! I actually really wanted to do it in acrylics at first, but that dream quickly died because first it was too cold to paint outside with my paints, and then it got too busy to take my paints outside, and then I was too busy to take my iPad outside at all and ended up just drawing from photos lol. But I had fun regardless! Even if the subject matter was... less than inspiring for most of this lousy slushy drab garbage spring month. But that's kind of the fun part of the challenge, right? I feel like the folks that live in the mountains or by the ocean or somewhere that looks gorgeous all the time kind of miss out on the exercise of trying to make the mundane beautiful, or at least eye-catching. I also just love breaking down what I see and trying to make sense of it on the page, while still maintaining a sense of personal style and flair. I hope to be…

ART ROUNDUP: MARCH 2024

This post has images! If they do not show up for you, please click through! I hope you all had a lovely long weekend! Please wish my partner Matt a happy belated birthday, it was on the 31st! He told me that one year when he was a kid his birthday fell on Easter and nobody came to his birthday party and that is one of the saddest things I've ever heard. On that note, let's look at some of the art I made this month! This is all just personal stuff and does not include any commissions, of which there were a fair few. Is this why my back always hurts? Nah, it's way easier to blame it on the kid. She can't read anyway. I've been trying to paint at least one or two acrylic studies a week, but I'll admit I've been pretty busy in the latter half of the month and have been slacking a bit on that front. It's okay, it's all marinating. I don't know what kind of painter I want to be yet, and all my ideas, influences, experiences--they're all composting while I rest or work on other things. Also I have apparently been going through another David Tennant/Doctor Who... thing... I guess, so who has the time when there's fanart to do? (Classic Alex move, really.) Aiming to do at least a couple #PleinAirpril studies, even if I just end up taking my ipad out because real paint feels like too much…

i put my children on the cover of CRIME Magazine, where they belong!!

I was obscenely tired this weekend and I tried to take a nap but then had to get up mid-relax because I suddenly had this idea and couldn't sleep until it was done and then the kiddo woke up and I had to do chores and have fun visiting my parents and cooking dinner and now it's Monday and I'm still super tired and I still haven't napped and I made myself an iced coffee with almost a quarter cup of instant coffee granules to no avail because caffeine doesn't wake me up and yet I still make the futile effort because at least it clears a bit of the fog. Anyway these are the best things I've drawn all month and so they get their own post. That's all. Have a nice week! I love to share my art and comics, and I'm extremely blessed to be able to do it full-time as a career, in part due to readers like you! BIRCH MURAL

This post has images! If they do not show up for you, please click through! Over the Christmas break I got to do a little birch forest mural in a friend's kitchen. It's taken me ages to post the photos because the lighting and space made it really hard to get a good picture that properly represents it, but I think I've hit the point where I've decided sharing bad phone pictures that look like they were taken on a little digital camera in 2003 is better than sharing nothing at all. ALSO, I am of the opinion that if I am going to lean into--nay, embrace--the vibes of the days before social media, I might as well go whole hog and do just regular blog posts with photos that look like they were taken on a digital camera in 2003. Anyway, shitty photos aside, I'm really happy with the actual mural, and I think they were too! The definition of "trust the process" Anyway, I have some tiktoks/reels with a few bits of the process, but it was actually a really easy technique. I only had a few colours: a honey-tinted off-white for the background, regular white, black, yellow, red, and a very light blue. -Mix a few leaf colours out of the yellow/red/blue, and paint a bunch of swipes on the wall. Be sparing with the red as it will overwhelm quickly. -Make tree trunk shapes out of painters tape all up the wall, fill with light blue,…
