ART ROUNDUP: SUMMER 2024

Ahoy hoy! Man, summer is nuts hey? It’s already middle of August? Neat/yikes.

Okay let’s see here, what have we been up to? I’m jotting this all down quickly, because at the time of writing, I still need to go tear down a display, go grocery shopping, and prep the house/pack/assemble the kid’s travel bag for a road trip I’m about to head out on to visit my family up north (I should be back by the time this sends) and it’s already after 1pm! My grandma hasn’t even met the kiddo yet, so it’s past time we had a family reunion. Seeing some family members I haven’t seen or spoken to in literally years so it’s gonna be a mess hahaha I’m so excited. However, it also means all day in a car with a rowdy little goblin girl so WISH ME LUCK.

RIGHT. SO. Those of you who have been following me for a while know that every year, I paint a pedestrian bridge with Cool Streets WPG which is always a blast and an honour, but unfortunately this year I was supposed to paint a new bridge that isn’t usually on our roster (good!) but then negotiations with the city fell through or something idk (bad!) but it’s okay because I got to draw some sick-ass maps instead (good!)! I’m super happy with how they came out, they’re so cute and fun and bright! Huge thanks to CCFM and the City of Winnipeg for helping us bring this project to life every year for like.. half a decade now?? We’re so blessed.

I have a bunch of new stuff in the store too! I had a great time at the Winnipeg 150 Outdoor Market at The Forks last month, and I have another one coming up on August 24th so I hope to see you there. I got new stickers printed for it–some revamped Cheryl Lashek stickers as well as a couple new Birb stickers–and have been working on a couple zines as well! I have this one–Grouchese!–available online now as a tribute to all the unhinged sandwiches Matt and I have served to each other over the years.

I did another round of “picture day” caricatures with Made Here at the end of July, which was fun. I was especially chuffed that so many people brought in photos of their pets and chose the laser background.

I’m also working on a few things I can’t share yet, but on a personal work side I’m continuing to make progress on my goals of

A) having a proper kid lit art portfolio so I can send it into publishers for consideration. I WILL DRAW AND WRITE FOR CHILDREN YET. IT WILL HAPPEN!

and

B) working on a catalogue of fan art worth selling so I can start doing the fun convention circuits!

On a related note I’ve lost my entire mind to the new Gravity Falls stuff that’s come out and I no longer have a personality. Alex Hirsch (the creator) has ruined my life. Please, I have a family and they’re so annoyed. I rewatched the finale the other day while doing my tax spreadsheets and sobbed! About cartoons! You can’t just keep putting out top tier entertainment and expect us all to be normal about it!! (Was kind of expecting my upcoming road trip to cure me but I’m starting to doubt it…)

(I really want and need to do art of the rest of the characters because they’re ALL amazing…. but on the other hand, why bother when I have very little time for personal work and my favourite little jerkass blorbo is a triangle with an eye that I can draw in 30 seconds? The effort-to-reward ratio is off the charts!!)

Okay uhhhh I THINK that’s everything! A note that I will once again have the signed 12″x18″ CAN-D-MAN prints that my pal Nyco Rudolph and I collaborated on at my table on August 24th, but you can get the unsigned 8″x10″ prints on my site now, as well as in-store at Bear Face General Store and Forks Trading Company.

Thanks for reading you’re the best hope to see you on Saturday love you mucho byeeeee!!!
