Good lord, what a crazy summer it has been so far. The temperature is 22C today. Normally, anything over 20 is tank top weather for me, but after multiple weeks of “feels 40+” I was comfortably wearing a jean jacket out and about, which is kind of bonkers for someone (me) who is normally a damp sweaty mess at all times. I hope you have all been staying safe and hydrated and healthy!
I have some upcoming art that hasn’t been announced yet, so expect another email with some bright new illustration and mural work in the very near future as well as some announcements about upcoming events, but today I want to mention that I am launching a webcomic!
Since Christmas (I say that, but realistically it’s been over a year), I’ve been struggling quite a lot with severe burnout, so a lot of things I was working on got put on the backburner for a while. I’m back working full days again and doing MUCH better than I was, but even so, I recently made the call to shelve some pitches I was working on and hold off on talking to publishers for the rest of the year. One of those pitches was a potential Pip and Gunko book–a series of short vignettes about these two idiot bunny friends–but in all honesty, I was genuinely worried that I would not be able to deliver on a deadline if I landed a contract, and that’s not the ideal look when breaking into a new industry as a fledgling author.
Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that pitching a full-length graphic novel is a really risky idea at this exact moment. And that’s okay! I was really mad about admitting defeat for a while, but these two bring me so much joy to write and draw that I decided to take some of the stuff I’d written for my pitch and start turning it into a low-pressure webcomic. I’m genuinely excited by the prospect!
It starts updating today, just one page a week on Wednesdays for now while I continue to build my creative health back up, but if I get enough readers, I would love to be able to increase that to two pages a week. Additionally, if you are subscribed to my Patreon at the $5 CAD tier or higher, you will get to read each short comic all at once instead of one page at a time.
